He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.
Comment:
The root Hebrew word here גָּנַב (Ganab) which means to steal, in this case the object of the stealing is a human being which translates as kidnapping in modern English.
We have coded this amber as we cannot carry this out without the proper authority, though our understanding is that kidnapping for ransom or sale is not acceptable to Yahweh in any way.
We see in the story of Joseph that his brothers appeared to know that they had done something very wrong and even after Jacob’s death they feared that their brother might bring down judgement upon them. Instead they find his forgiveness (Genesis 50:15-21).
There are many modern examples of kidnapping; Human trafficking, babies taken and sold for adoption, the trade in human body parts for the transplant market. These are all surely as unacceptable to Yahweh now as they were then.
